the music…

Hello everyone, this is my first post for our current project Little Songs of Long Ago!! The excitement running through me is long overdue. My name is Mike Mavilia and I will be handling the music production side of the film.

First, let me tell you that I have never written a soundtrack to a film… the excitement grows even more. What better way for a musician to really let loose but with an ORIGINAL composition for an animated film! WOW! I feel so honored to be able to work in this project. Little Songs of Long Ago as you know is based on a children’s song book from the early 1900’s. Many of the songs in the book are childrens songs that you still hear today. The film is based on those characters from the songs, so… my approach is going to be based around a “peter and the wolf” type technique, where all of the characters are going to have their own “theme”. This theme is going to be the song from which the character came from. Simple.

But not really… My backround in music is very diverse. I am a pianist and a drummer, whose focus has been anything and everything from Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms to Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, and Medeski Martin and Wood… just to name a very few. So my goal will be to keep the music in the time period of the film AND to add some never before seen flavor that will satisfy all musical taste. There will be very little spoken lines in the film so my great challenge will be to express enough in these “themes” to really draw the audience in.

As far as the final score.. i am thinking of making it a full orchestral piece. Still undecided at this point because frankly with technology that is available now i could do it myself. But thats it for now. I promise i will keep you posted… Thanks!!
